Pindi life 74-76
My story begins and ends in Rawalpindi. My Dad was stationed with UNMOGIP, out of the UN Security Council. It was the mission observer group in India and Pakistan. So, we were 6 months in Srinigar, Kashmir for summers, on the magical, beautiful Dal lakes, and 6 in Pindi. We kids stayed in Pindi attending ISI, in Islamabad. We ended up renting a place near the Mards and Marnells and Van Der Oords, fellow UN families in Pindi. I remember bb guns, fascinating ki...lls of various frogs and birds. My older brother and Rogier let me tag along. I was 10 that summer, leading into fall, when school would start. Bus rides to school with Tarbala Dam kids. One American stayed with us, long brown hair, nice smile, he loved my Moms apple pie! We had a dog, Kalu, only dog we ever had. He was a loyal dog. We had 2 servants quarters, one on the roof, another behind the house. My brother and I would climb to the top and jump down into the servants quarters. We had a mali, gardener and a servant in Kashmir, where my Mom would play Canasta or Bridge in the summer. These were the years I learned, Jeve, jeve Pakistan, Pakistan, Pakistan, jeve Pakistan. I remember Iqbal, who always called me little memsahib Poom. He rewove our beds with the white thick cotton cloths. He ended up in Florida, as he was learning English as he was serving as servant/nanny to my brother and I. He'd take the whole family trout fishing in Srinagar, along the ice cold streams, along the foothills of the Himalayan mountains in the summer. Trout has never tasted better that what he caught that summer! A magical Shangrila, that Kashmir! The houseboats, chikara rides, etched in my mind forevermore.

Love the spring, and summer should be nice, as the Taylor Reunion, the Walkers, all of Jim's family~ and.. as we march into spring, pass the summer solstice, and I love watching the fireflies, gleaming in the night, flickering their signs to each other, into the night, magical. Miss Alex, at UT, in Texas, but, Galveston calls, so heading back to the sea, in July!! Life is good, chai yo, la chaim, to life!Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-36266758.post-30980662106278275232013-03-12T08:41:00.001-07:002013-03-12T08:41:40.336-07:00Marching into spring!Pittsburgh is getting fun! Meeting wonderful new friends at the YMCA, and connecting with CAC and AIS friends in DC and New York. Alex is in UT and a junior!! Jim is happy with Baker Inc, and I am happily and slowly job hunting. My family are fine, in Florida and NJ, along with my Thai family, back home. As for Taylors, Grandpa Floyd holds strong in early onstage Alz. Has progressed really slowly, so, we are happy that he is doing well. 2013 is turning out to be great, went to see the groundhog, and he predicted Spring is around the corner!! That it is! It was cold in Punxy, and ... once was enough. Maybe one more time, but, 10 degrees is really cold!! Way below freezing!Unknownnoreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-36266758.post-25675239377965241362012-01-29T20:33:00.001-08:002012-01-29T20:33:51.625-08:002012 Year of the Black Water Dragon! From the Wood Dragon, good times to come! They got the contractors, survived the storm, were there to get the water out, and the first floor has been cleaned out, by ServiceMasters.

Most of us got back to the Rosenberg Library on Monday, Sept. 29th.

I'm back after 2 weeks, and we went to the Moody Methodist Library to check on our book drop and the Rosenberg Library van, which were all in good shape.

Interesting posting:

I wish to issue a strong response to the message from “Disappointed & Concerned.” This individual has no first hand information about the Rosenberg Library—I do. I am head of the Library’s Galveston and Texas History Center and the Museum. Hurricane Ike did not affect these two areas, which are on the Rosenberg Library’s third floor. The historical collections suffered no wind or water damage. Further, I spent 2½ hours examining the Galveston and Texas History Center’s archives, which shows no signs of mold infestation. Before the storm made landfall, my staff made extensive preparations to protect and secure our artifacts and historical documents. The Museum staff removed valuable paintings, as well as the shadow box from the first floor Children’s Department, to the third floor. The Galveston and Texas History Center staff moved all archival materials to the vault and secured valuable documents by covering shelves with tarpaulins. Staff accomplished these tasks in a narrow time window. They completed preparations late Thursday morning, when the Mayor of Galveston had already ordered a mandatory evacuation. Finally, I wish to refute the anonymous author’s uninformed allegation of John Augelli’s “lack of planning and leadership.” At his behest, the Library undertook various storm protection improvements over the past several years. Before the storm, he had the Rosenberg Library’s employees execute a comprehensive Hurricane Preparedness Policy. At risk to himself, he stayed in the Library during the hurricane. At the conclusion of the storm, he took fast action in making arrangements to have flood water removed and mold remediated on the first floor. He also arranged with another contractor to provide air conditioning to the upper floors. Mr. Augelli has been in close touch daily with the laborious cleaning process. I know firsthand that John Augelli cares deeply for the Rosenberg Library and its magnificent collections. He values the Library’s historical treasures. I’m fully confident he’s doing everything that can be done to protect the Rosenberg Library and return it to full function. First floor was flooded. Hope the third floor, history center, premiere in Texas and the museum survive.

We, the Rosenberg Library staff are awaiting word. Galveston has allowed a look and leave policy on return to the isle. But the lines are long.

Barbara, Casey and Shannon are in Corpus. Cathy and I are fine, in League City and Clear Lake. We have water, but no electricity. The other half of Meadowgreeen has power. He who controls the electric grid, controls a lot of power.

Gas was distributed under the watchful eye of two HPD cops. Thanks to them and the Chevron staff, lines moved quickly. I was behind an Asian lady, who went shopping for cigarettes, while there was a line out to highway 3! The chutzpah!

We have not accounted for one of our own, Ruth. I hope she and Mary Pat are okay. I have heard from almost everyone else. Brenda flew to Utah and is now safely ensconsed in Vegas.

If anyone has ideas for housing let me know, as most of us live on the isle. I hope we get power soon.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-36266758.post-29712642576829254712008-09-12T20:18:00.000-07:002008-09-12T20:20:35.115-07:00Evading Ike in Pasadena...We still have power, Noelle, Mona, Alex, Jim, AJ and I are at his place on Parkwood.

Winds are heavy, and Hurricane Ike has struck Galveston. We met at the chapel, down in Galveston, on May 9th, Friday and there was a white horse and carriage right in front of the 1900 house, where they got married.

Jhim looked gorgeous in white, with a tulle (clear, white) shawl over her shoulders, she said, "I do" with Jasper's family and Nora, Lou, Pi Suwalat and I all there to celebrate with her. We all had a lovely lunch at Mario's on the seawall, coffee, drinks, cheesecake was enjoyed by Anthony, AJ, Monica et al. Thank you, Jasper!!!

We actually debated whether Apollo missions landed on the moon more than once! Little did some people realize, Jim works for USA, the prime shuttle processor for NASA for the past 20 years, and we actually read...was quite an amusing discussion.

Weather was also gorgeous, so all went well, and Ford Contour 97 is still up and running! This has become Jhim's trademark car!

Congrats to the bride and groom!Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-36266758.post-33545649198359223902008-05-10T18:42:00.000-07:002008-05-10T18:59:58.802-07:00Bangalore, Delhi, Malaysia and Quezon CityWhat do these places have in common??? A had look in the attic revealed lots of lost treasures...

Hope he feels better, the pain is dissipating, and doesn't need pain killers anymore, as of day 2 on ankle injury!

Woo hoo!

Jimbo runs in the Houston Marathon this weekend.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-36266758.post-186238870706744682008-01-01T15:12:00.000-08:002008-01-01T15:30:49.879-08:00Nabeela's Wedding in December~

Nabeela was a gorgeous bride, looked like a movie star! Went to the Chiengmai dinner ensemble, with dancing and dinner. Then the Night Bazaar, we had fun, got bootleg DVDS, Rolex watches, silk bedspreads and learned the art of negotiation!

Go down to at least 1/2 to 1/3 of the asking price, and just walk away. Faith was pretty good at this, and almost fooled Isra, who thought she really didn't want the bedspread!

So, a big thank you to Khun Pa Aree, Ah Paew, Ah Chawlit and Pi B for hosting us!!!!Unknownnoreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-36266758.post-41963936463518692002007-11-25T19:48:00.000-08:002007-11-25T20:17:43.474-08:00Live from Bangkok!!Here were are at the Internet cafe, near the Asia Hotel. My cousin, Pi B, reserved the place for us.

We got back to BKK, from Prachuabkirikhan, on Saturday. We stayed at the Prachauab Beach Hotel, owned by the Chaichana family. Ah Chawalit, aka Pi Yai, is oldest brother of a group of 12, three brothers have died, and Ah Lek, little brother, is managing the hotel, with Ah Ban, second brother. He knows Na Naeng, as Ah Ban was a deputy sherif, and Na Naeng was a lawyer.

We had a great time at the Air Force, 5th wing, now open to the public, and got to feed the dusky langurs, who have golden haired babies until they turn 3 months old, then they turn black and white as the adult langurs. They're monkeys with ring around their eyes, sort of like raccoons! They were very polite and ate right out of our hands, yams and peanuts. They loved the peanuts, and would peel the brown skin off. Some naughty ones, smacked the head of their neighbors, so they could steal food. Most of them were really polite, though, unlike their cousins the macau monkeys who are very wild and overpopolate the temple downtown Prachuab, and steal bags and fruit!!

We'd just gotten back from Chieng Mai, Chieng Rai, Poo Chee Fa, and Doi Ma Salong. Peak of Thailand's mountains(Doi means peak/mountain). We saw the Hill Tribe people, Karen, Hmong etc.

Climbed up Poo Chee Fa at the crack of dawn, have great pics, from my brother, Jessada.

Alex, Jim, Faith, Isra, Jessada and I were accompanied by Pa Aree and Ah Paew. Our guides were Nung and Sutaep. Twas a fun trip, 10 hours to Chiengmai, glad we had great company.

Got back to King Park Avenue, next to Secon Square dept. store???, and split up after breakfast yesterday.

Met up with the Krainarongs, Singh ha Raeds, and Jalayanakuptas, along with the Taengwiwats. I met the Singharaeds, who I haven't really seen since Mom died, and I was 13. Na Maew and her family, along with Na Jeap and her husband and son. Nong Owb, Na Naeng's daughter, got Khun Yai Walai's family together.

As for the Krainarongs, met Nong Nan and Pi Lin, the kids, Neem and Nut. Neem must be abotu 10 and Nut was quite a character, 4 or so. He was in his doggy stage, and crawling on the floor and under the tables. Na Naeng got out his gold necklace, only to be worn at home, silver for public outings, as he doesn't want to get robbed. He had 7 prahs, per necklace.

He's doing well, considering the car accident and injury, which left him with a bag for urine and damage to the fine motor movements. His spinal cord was affected, and there was some infection to the nerve, several years ago.

B, O and R were all at dinner, along with Na Lek and Na Suchin. Nong R and Nong Tom and great buddies, as well as condo mates! Ended up in the same condo, after he got separated, 3 years ago.

Nong R, or Anat, called Pi Pit and got him to talk to everyone around the table, Na Lek's family and Nong Tom. It was really thoughtful of Nong R to do that. I'm glad I had my cell, with Pi Pit's number. Everyone's been asking how Pi Pit is. I hope he gets the chance to come home and meet our family!!

Pi Boom was happy to communicate with Nong Alex, over dinner at Shagrila Restaurant. We had shark fin soup, quail, lobster, pork and 2 ducks. Got teh skin fried, duck meat turned into soup and another dish, not quite identifiable....

Today is Jim and Alex's last day, and my first chance to blog!

Sawasdee from BKK!

PoomUnknownnoreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-36266758.post-5662033245168191302007-07-04T13:28:00.000-07:002007-07-04T13:47:33.036-07:00Comp tickets...Amanda was right. One can cause a ruckus and complain. I emailed the prez. of Six Flags Fiesta, the online comment form, and the head of security.

Got a call within the hour, and the Manager of Safety and Security, David Norten. He apoloized profusely, and offered comp. tickets for the entire family.

I considering telling him I have no intention of ever setting foot in a Naziland of unknown rules...but... why give up comp. tickets?

Apparantly, one relinquishes rights to photos upon accepting tickets to private property. Security guards are not subject to the same scrutiny as police officers.

I still may email my story to Sharpie, and let them know, I want the right to carry my Sharpie wherever I go! Even Six Flags...

Interestingly, some friends of mine think it's okay, post 9-11 to be subject to all kinds of idiotic searches.

I don't. In Israel, where I lived for 10 years, there was zero tolorance to any perceived danger, can't let bags stand unattended, illegal, subject to random searches and road blocks. That didn't stop the 2cd intifada(Sept. 29, 2000), nor the First Intifada (1987 - 1993). Sure hope America doesn't become a paranoid dictarship...

Can't believe Bush pardoned Scooter Libby! What a hyprocrite. Thank goodness he's on his way out. The Supreme Court is dangerously conservative, thanks to the ones who voted Bush in twice! As if one error was not enough, the first time he suspiciously beat Gore in Florida, then the Ohio ballot against Kerry, was just as questionable.

Okay, off to enjoy tennis with the boys, if the rain ever stops!

Happy July 4th!Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0
